As the name suggests an electric hot water system is a water heating system where the main fuel used is electricity.
Electric hot water systems are more popular than gas systems in Australia as they have a lower initial cost and are available across the country.

Hot water forms a large part of the household budget. It is also a big source of greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to a solar hot water system can save you lots of money and significantly lower your carbon footprint.
For the average Australian home, heating water accounts for 15 to 27 per cent of household energy use, depending on where you live. A solar hot water system is a great way to lower that cost. Although it is a big upfront investment, the ongoing savings more than make up for that initial outlay. This is particularly true in Darwin, given the large number of sunny days we enjoy.
Conventional gas or electric water heating systems are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions for the average Aussie home, generating up to 25 per cent of its total emissions. Installing a solar system knocks them down to virtually zero.
Solar water heating systems may be eligible for federal and territory government rebates and other forms of assistance. They may qualify for renewable energy incentives known as small-scale technology certificates (STCs).
It is important to ensure that the contractor you select is licensed, fully insured and has experience installing solar systems. The installation process can be summarised in six steps.
The collectors are installed on your roof facing as close to north as possible. The collectors are similar in shape and size to photovoltaic panels that generate electricity. The collectors are positioned flat, that is, in line with the existing angle of your roof.
Your contractor will remove small portions of roof covering (tiles, Colorbond, corrugated iron, or whatever), enough to expose sections of your roof rafters. Mounting brackets are screwed directly into the rafters.
The roof covering is then reaffixed, the collectors lifted into place and, finally, screwed to the mounting brackets.
The storage tank is usually installed in the roof space or on the ground, either indoors or outdoors.
Once water is heated in the collectors, it is piped under gravity into the storage tank. The contractor will install pipes connecting the collectors and tank. The contractor will also remove the water connection into your home from your old hot water heater and connect it to your new storage tank.
The system has sensors to measure water temperature in the storage tank and water flow through the system. The sensors are connected to an automatic controller that regulates water flow. This setup ensures that, as hot water is consumed, the storage tank is topped up with new hot water from the collectors.
It also ensures that, if the water temperature in the storage tank drops below target, water from the tank is sent up to the collectors to be reheated.
These units run on electricity and therefore need to plug into the grid.
The contractor may also need to install an electric-powered pump to shoot water up to the solar collectors on the roof.
The installation will incorporate various safety aspects such as an air vent, pressure relief valve, drain valve and isolation ball valves.
Once all components are installed, the contractor will recover any holes in your roof, check that connections are securely sealed, and insulate any exposed piping. Lost heat equals lost savings.

There are a number of potential causes for this issue depending on the type of hot water system you have.
For solar systems, something as simple as solar panel orientation and cleaning can solve this issue. However, most commonly, no hot water is caused by a leak or stuck check valve. Our plumbers can inspect your system and conduct repairs to the check valve on the spot.
If you have an electric system, there are two main causes for no hot water. The first is that the power to the unit has been interrupted or may not be connected. The second is that the thermostat may need replacing. Contact our emergency service for a prompt response.
